Domestic Violence

Image

Eyes watering, wobbly knees, heart racing, grinding teeth.

Listening to the shrieks in your scream.

Drops of fear glistening down my cheeks.

Rushing to the phone but you’d yell not to call the police.

Watching the pain in your cry.

Listening to the truth in your lies

Saying everything will be alright.

But the fights at night

Scarred me for life.

I was young but I knew

That love doesn’t mark purple and blue

I was young but all I wanted to do

Was save you.

In the eye of the hurricane

I was brave enough to stand strong

To stand between you both

Screaming “don’t touch mom!”

Protecting you because you were too weak.

Too weak to walk away and see

That he was hurting you

But you were hurting me.

  2. Erika, This post made me cry. Not tears of sadness, but tears of knowing I’m not the only one who went through that as a child. No one should have to go through that. Violence is NOT the answer EVER. Thank you for posting this.

  3. ‘Like’ didn’t seem appropriate for this, somehow – but I did like it, in the sense that it’s powerful and effective. Excellent piece of writing. ‘Enjoy’ is the wrong word, again, in many ways, but nonetheless a rewarding read.
