Hopeless Romantic

They say a realist is a frustrated romantic. Maybe, that’s true.

I am a romantic; A hopeless one.

I believe falling in love turns a gray sky blue.

It makes music lively, visuals vibrant, food richer, smells intoxicating.

 Infatuation is a mind-altering state.

It enhances your senses, your mood, and your life.

Falling in love brings you to life.

Love is the only medicine for a broken heart.  It’s the only emotion that can conquer hate. It has the power to transform you, change you and make you grow faster and more effective than anything else.

But what happens when you fall in love, you build your world around someone, you make them your everything and then they leave you?  Then, you’re left with nothing, right?

Then, it’s the opposite effect.  Your blue sky is gray. Music is noise, visuals are dull, food is bland and smells are pungent.  The heart ache breaks you down. It’s like an anchor pulling you down.

It sucks the life right out of you.

Is it worth it? Laying your heart on the line; is it worth the risk?

If your happiness rests on someone they have the power to take it away. They have the ability to destroy your happiness.

I just won’t give anyone that power anymore.

But as I write the words, I know before I even complete the sentence that it’s not true.

I will love again, I will break again and then love again.

That’s what hopeless romantics do.

  4. Hi Erika,
I like your poetry a lot. And I like that you are such a believer in love! Knowing that true love is all about wishing the other person to be happy, not about what you are getting from them, can go a long way toward making it painless. I think you know that, which makes you a hopeful romantic. 🙂

  5. Beautiful thoughts! And so true. We fall in love all the time, and then we have to still remember to keep a piece of ourselves in tact. Beautifully said! Thank you for following my blog, I look forward to following yours.

  6. I m in love with your writing, the way u write definitely might have made other feel the same. I would be regular here. Don’t wanna miss any of your beautiful creations.

      • You are welcome, darling. And it is you that is beautiful… I mean “truly” beautiful. I just start following your blog and I think you have a beautiful soul. So much about you reminds me of myself. And by the way, I had chills when I heard you sing, “Someone Like You.” Sister, I would choose your version to Adelle’s “any day”. It was captivating and I felt it deep… to my core. I believe that God has a high calling on your life and that you are “very” special…extraordinary, in fact. You are a pure heart and your external beauty is unspeakable…but I think your inner beauty surpasses that…if that’s even possible. God bless you, little Mama. Thank you for sharing your heart and making me feel not so alone…

      • Ava,
Oh my God. I don’t know what i did to deserve such beautiful and kind words but I feel it was blessing. I had to read this twice because i feel such good vibes from it. I am sure we are very alike. I could feel you from all the way over here. I can see that light radiating from within you. You are wonderful. You are beautiful. You are magnificent. I feel alone all the time and sometimes it starts to build and i feel an emptiness but then the feeling passes and i feel so blessed. I feel so grateful and I remember that i am here because of my own choice & that life is this terrible, wonderful engine of evolution. Keep your head held high princess. You are also very special. You are here to remind others of their light by sharing yours. You are just right as who you are and where you are right now. You are perfect. I hope you never forget how worthy you are even when your struggling to see the meaning of life and the beauty in yourself. You are a Goddess. I am blessed to have met you.

        With love always,

  7. Of love, the foundation should always rest in your God, who never turns away, and then any relationship, let it be built upon that love…and if both share the same idea, it has a very good chance to last. And yet if it happens to fail, God will be there for you! Beautiful words and thoughts again my sister! Hugs and blessings always!

    • I’ve always felt the same way. If love can start that way then you are off to a very good start. I think this idea of someone completing you is dangerous. It is very romantic to say that you were nothing before you met that special someone but you were something and you are something great. You are a part of God.

  8. It’s always worth laying your heart on the line Erika, who knows, the missing half to your soul may fill it once again.

  9. I completely agre. When you’re in love (or having a passionate relationship), that carries over to all your perceptions of the world. It’s like you’ve got an extra weapon in your emotional and psychological arsenal (toolbox). It’s been so long since I’ve experienced that but I sometimes give up hope that it’ll ever happen again. Then I remember my motto: live life with an open mind and an honest heart. Better things happen more often when I live out my mantra.

  11. without hope there is less brightness to look forward to

oh and you misspelled. “you make them you’re everything” its your I don’t men to criticise 🙂

  12. I can understand and feel every word you have written. After this last time if being broken and destroyed, I truly cannot feel right now like going through the whole process again. Because if it falls apart – like it always does – I do not believe I can handle it.

  13. Beautifully put, Erika. If we seek Live outside of ourselves, we will always be disappointed. True Love has to come from within! “The love you take is equal to the love you make” – John Lennon.

  14. very truthful. Love does wonders, that’s why it’s called love. However, once you try, you never dare to ask for it again but it’ll surely knock on your door one day and as a hopeless romantic, you’ll open with a grin on your face. Lovely post, thanks for sharing. 🙂

  15. Can relate to that so much. So afraid of falling into love again tbh! I know I will though but for now I’m trying to resist as much as possible!
